Katwijk Council Rejects VVD Bid for Sunday Shopping

A standing coalition pact commits the municipality to no Sunday opening.

Overview

  • Councillors voted 25–7 on December 18 to keep shops closed on Sundays, defeating the VVD motion.
  • ChristenUnie, DURF and SGP upheld their coalition agreement, with the CDA also voting against the proposal.
  • The VVD offered to implement Sunday opening from July 1, 2026 after the next elections, but the offer did not win support.
  • DURF reiterated that its position reflects reliability to agreed commitments within the current coalition.
  • VVD councillor Leendert Hoek argued the ban imposes one group’s will on others, while faction leader Lennart van der Plas reported receiving both supportive and hostile messages after earlier debates.
