Kashmir Enters Milder Chillai Khurd as New Western Disturbances Line Up

Forecasts point to intermittent precipitation from February 1, keeping avalanche alerts in place for higher reaches.

Overview

  • Chillai Kalan ended on January 30, with Srinagar’s minimum briefly rising to 1.3°C before dipping to −0.1°C the following night as the transition began.
  • The J&K MeT expects three to four western disturbances over the next 10 days, with light to moderate rain and snow likely from January 31 to February 3 and further wet spells next week.
  • Avalanche warnings remain in effect for higher areas of Ganderbal, Bandipora, Kupwara, Doda and Kishtwar after a recent Sonamarg avalanche that caused no reported casualties.
  • Travel operations have improved with the SrinagarJammu highway and flights running, though high passes such as Zojila and the Mughal Road remain closed, and the BRO has reopened the Kishtwar–Sansari link to Himachal.
  • Authorities have advised farmers to suspend fieldwork through February 7, and late snowfall has lifted tourism with full bookings in Gulmarg and strong occupancy in Sonamarg.
