Karnataka's 2025 Groundwater Report Shows Statewide Gains, Severe Overuse Near Bengaluru

Officials plan satellite-plus-AI tracking to target overuse hotspots.

  • The new 2025 assessment reports statewide extraction fell to 66.49% from 68.44% as annual recharge rose to 19.28 BCM from 18.74 BCM.
  • The report shows 85 taluks use under half their recharge and 45 use more than they get in a year, with Bengaluru East at 378.85%.
  • Water conservation works multiplied to 3.94 lakh from 3.15 lakh and boosted recharge through such structures by 29.11% to 1.04 BCM.
  • Officials said more surface supply, including a partial Cauvery-V rollout in Bengaluru and Jal Jeevan Mission taps, trimmed domestic pumping to 1,21,023 ham.
  • Minister N S Boseraju said a Digital Water Stack will bring real-time groundwater tracking with satellite data and AI.
