Karnataka Restarts Regulated Safaris at Bandipur and Nagarahole Under Tighter Curbs

Officials say regulated tourism is not tied to recent tiger attacks.

Overview

  • Safaris resumed after a Nov. 7 suspension triggered by tiger attacks near Bandipur, with operations now limited and closely regulated.
  • Bandipur runs two sessions from 6:30–9:00 a.m. and 3:30–6:00 p.m. at roughly 50% capacity; Nagarahole operates shorter four-hour windows with capped vehicles across its safari centres.
  • Police have been posted at key access points, visitors must leave phones behind, and NTCA protocols require silence and moving on within five minutes of a tiger sighting.
  • Farmers’ groups opposing the restart are holding strategy meetings and plan a protest at the Regional Commissioner’s office in Mysuru on Feb. 25.
  • Vehicle allocations include Forest Department fleets and Jungle Lodges and Resorts units, drivers and guides have returned to duty, and GPS trackers with dashboard cameras are to be installed within two months.
