Karnataka Moves to Toughen Excise Laws, Seeks NDPS Cover for Chloral Hydrate

A committee led by retired IAS officer K. P. Krishnan will draft tougher measures targeting chloral hydrate–fuelled spurious liquor in border districts.

Overview

  • Excise Minister R. B. Timmapur told the Assembly the government will introduce stricter legislation to curb illegal liquor sales.
  • The state will recommend adding chloral hydrate to the NDPS Act, with a fallback plan to pass state-level curbs if the Centre does not act.
  • Official data cited for Raichur show 183 cases over three years and about 13,557 litres of country liquor seized.
  • Authorities report diversion from CL-6 and MSIL outlets and military canteens into illegal retail, alongside use of chloral hydrate to make spurious liquor.
  • One person has been externed and nine more are recommended, with continuous patrols underway and special squads proposed for Raichur and Yadgir.
