Karnataka High Court Halts Chamundeshwari Temple Construction, Orders Audit of ₹47 Crore

The stop-work order enforces earlier promises the state is accused of breaking.

Overview

  • The single-judge bench led by Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum issued Tuesday’s order stopping all work at the Mysuru shrine and warned the Mysuru deputy commissioner of aggravated contempt for any breach.
  • The court directed the deputy commissioner to file, within two weeks, a detailed affidavit on how ₹47 crore from a central tourism scheme was spent, listing each work and its current stage.
  • Photographs and filings on record showed construction continued despite prior interim orders and a state undertaking, including permanent structures below ground, the court said.
  • The case stems from a petition by Pramoda Devi Wadiyar challenging the 2024 law that set up a development authority for the temple, which she says infringes constitutional and traditional rights.
  • State lawyers said the works are part of a Ministry of Tourism project for devotees, including a planned multipurpose area, but the judge held that funding or intent cannot override binding court directions.
