Karina Weakens in Central Pacific as Marie Drives Life‑Threatening Swells to Mexico and California

Overview

• The Central Pacific Hurricane Center reported Karina centered near 20.6°N, 141.1°W with maximum sustained winds of about 85 mph and a minimum pressure of 978 mb.
• Karina is moving west and is expected to gradually weaken, with forecasters projecting it will become post‑tropical by Monday.
• Although Karina’s center is well east of the main Hawaiian Islands, tropical‑storm‑force winds extend up to about 150 miles from the center and are producing very rough seas east of 140°W.
• The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Marie is a stronger system near 20.2°N, 118.6°W with 85‑kt winds and 972 mb pressure, and its swells will raise the risk of life‑threatening surf and rip currents along southwest Mexico, the Baja Peninsula and into Southern California.
• Forecasters are also monitoring a separate area of low pressure well offshore southwestern Mexico that has a medium chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next seven days, likely remaining offshore if it develops.
