Overview
- Karen Derrico was arraigned on Tuesday, June 23 and pleaded not guilty to felony counts that include aggravated stalking, harassment, violating a protection order and preventing a witness from testifying; she was released on a $2,000 bond with an ankle monitor and is due back in court on August 6.
- Prosecutors say the case is based on a series of emails that allegedly threatened to kill her ex-husband, Deon, and their children and on a phone audio clip first circulated by TMZ in which Karen can be heard making a menacing remark to a child.
- Deon Derrico has publicly said several children reported the threats, that many have been sleeping in his room for safety, and that 12 of the couple’s 14 children are currently staying with him; he denies any role in creating the emails.
- Karen’s attorney, Jess Marchese, has called the emails crude forgeries and says the defense has retained a forensic expert to examine metadata, IP tracing and other technical evidence to challenge authorship and authenticity.
- The case combines criminal procedure, child-custody effects and high public visibility from the couple’s TLC profile, and upcoming forensic and evidentiary rulings will determine whether the disputed digital evidence can be used at trial.
