Karachi Universities Shift Classes Online After Sharp Fuel Price Hike

Government advisers report comfortable fuel stocks, proposing temporary remote work to cut consumption.

Overview

  • The University of Karachi will hold all morning classes online from March 9 until the end of Ramazan under a notification approved by Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi.
  • KU also ordered up to a 25% cut in petrol use for university vehicles in response to the fuel-price shock.
  • Federal Urdu University said its Karachi campus will teach online from March 11 to 16, and its Islamabad campus from March 9 to 27, with a semester break at Karachi beginning March 16.
  • NED University has completed preparations to shift teaching online immediately if directed, with regular instruction currently paused for Ramazan.
  • The moves follow a Rs55 per litre rise in petrol and diesel; a federal committee briefed the prime minister on potential work-from-home and online schooling measures, possible weekly price reviews, and said current fuel reserves are adequate though conditions remain fluid.
