Karachi Links Orange and Green BRT, Launches Double-Decker Bus Trials

Passengers will use one card across both corridors, reducing transfers and costs.

Overview

  • Sindh inaugurated the Orange–Green connection, expanding the Orange Line from four to ten stops and enabling through travel from Orangi to Nagan Chowrangi on a unified fare card.
  • Double-decker buses returned after nearly five decades with a December 31 trial from Malir to Sharea Faisal and up to Zainab Market, with public service slated to start January 1, 2026.
  • The new double-decker route spans 22 kilometres with distance-based fares of Rs80–Rs120, with authorities indicating plans to extend routes after the pilot phase.
  • Officials reported about 125,000 daily riders on the People’s Bus Service and 65,000–80,000 on the Green Line, and set a goal of roughly 100,000 daily passengers on the linked BRT.
  • The government cited new electric buses, resumed Red Line work, a Rs9 billion allocation for industrial-area roads, and a PIDCL commitment to open the Green Line extension by October 31, 2026.
