Kamchatka Logs 14 Aftershocks in 24 Hours as Seismologists See Activity Easing by January

Officials report waning energy across the aftershock zone with a low likelihood of strong events.

Overview

  • The regional emergency service recorded 14 aftershocks of magnitude 3.5 to 5.3 over the past day, with one tremor felt up to intensity 4 in populated areas.
  • Volcanic monitoring remains heightened, with ash advisories in effect for Klyuchevskoy and noted activity at Bezymianny, Shiveluch, Karymsky, Kambalny and Krasheninnikov.
  • Danila Chebrov of the RAS geophysical service says the sequence is following expected patterns, with daily counts and average energy declining toward January.
  • Chebrov adds that occasional felt quakes could continue across a roughly 400 by 150 kilometer zone for about two years after the July 30 magnitude 8.8 mainshock.
  • Separate moderate quakes struck Ecuador (M6.1), Costa Rica (M5.8), Argentina (M5.7) and near the southern Kurils (M5.0), with no official reports of casualties or damage and no tsunami alert for the Kurils.
