Kagiyama Tops Malinin in Team Short Program, U.S. Lead Trimmed to One Point

Clean, high-difficulty jumping from Yuma Kagiyama tightened the team standings under the placement-based scoring format.

Overview

  • Ilia Malinin made his Olympic debut for Team USA in the men’s short program and scored 98.00 for second place.
  • Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama won the segment with 108.67, landing a quad toe–triple toe, a quad salchow and a crisp triple axel.
  • After the men’s short program, the United States remained in front with Japan one point back, with Italy, Canada and Georgia rounding out the five teams advancing.
  • Malinin had planned a quad axel but executed a shaky triple on that element, still securing valuable points for the U.S.
  • The second half of the team event opened with the free dance, with U.S. world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates returning to the ice.
