Jwala’s Five Cubs Lift India’s Cheetah Count to 53

A planned release at Nauradehi within about two months will expand habitat to support natural dispersal.

Overview

  • Namibian female Jwala delivered five cubs at Kuno on March 9, marking the 10th successful litter and taking thriving India-born cubs to 33, officials said.
  • The national tally now stands at 53 cheetahs, with 50 at Kuno National Park and three at Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, according to multiple reports.
  • Kuno authorities said all six adult females there have reproduced, and veterinary and field teams are keeping the new litter under close observation.
  • The NTCA described recent movements of two cheetahs from Kuno into Rajasthan’s Baran district as natural territorial dispersal, noting both animals are radio-collared and tracked via satellite.
  • Project Cheetah continues to scale up, with nine cheetahs brought from Botswana on February 28 and a cumulative 29 adult translocations since 2022, including nine adult deaths reported.
