Justin Verlander Set for Triple-A Rehab Start Tuesday

The outing will give Detroit a live benchmark to judge his left hip and determine whether he needs more rehab work before a major-league activation.

Overview

  • Justin Verlander is scheduled to start for Triple-A Toledo at Principal Park in Des Moines on Tuesday, June 2, marking his first competitive game since his March 30 start.
  • He was placed on the injured list in early April with left hip inflammation and was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 10 while the club managed his recovery.
  • Verlander completed two simulated games and has built his workload to roughly 70 pitches in bullpen and simulated work as part of a stepwise rehab plan.
  • Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the club will bring Verlander back to Detroit on Wednesday to reassess him and that it is unclear how many rehab outings or innings he will need.
  • The 43-year-old signed a one-year, $13 million deal to return to Detroit and his successful return could ease the Tigers’ rotation strain and affect roster decisions in the near term.
