Jury Convicts Three of Murder in Middlesbrough Machete Killing, Fourth of Manslaughter

Sentencing is set for July 7 at Teesside Crown Court.

Overview

  • The panel, which returned its decisions Wednesday after three days of deliberation, found Morgan Caldwell, Dominic Hall and an 18-year-old guilty of murder and Daniel Simpson guilty of manslaughter.
  • Jurors watched CCTV that showed a 4x4 ramming Anthony Dickons’ VW Passat in a North Ormesby car park before attackers smashed windows and used machetes, with a BB gun also used against Stephen Law.
  • Medical evidence showed a machete cut in Dickons’ thigh severed a major blood vessel, his heart stopped for 12 minutes at the scene, and he died later in hospital from the resulting injuries.
  • Prosecutors said the violence grew out of a drugs dispute over an alleged £20,000 cocaine theft, claiming a bag meant for payment was stuffed with toilet paper.
  • Dickons’ children said the verdicts bring some closure but not their father back, describing a loss that will leave lasting gaps in family milestones.
