Jury Acquits Stefon Diggs of Assault and Strangulation Charges

The acquittal removes a key barrier to the free-agent receiver’s return to the NFL.

Overview

  • A six-person jury in Dedham, which deliberated for about 90 minutes Tuesday, found Diggs not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery.
  • The case centered on a Dec. 2 encounter at his home, with Jamila “Mila” Adams testifying that he slapped her and choked her after a dispute over pay, and she also said they had a prior sexual relationship.
  • Defense attorneys argued no assault occurred, noting there were no medical records or photos and presenting videos and witnesses who said Adams appeared uninjured in the days that followed.
  • Jurors heard that Adams sought money after the fallout, from a $19,000 demand to an attorney’s $5.5 million request, and the judge warned her to answer questions directly during cross-examination.
  • Diggs was released by the Patriots in March and is a free agent, and his lawyers said the verdict should help him pursue a contract for the 2026 season.
