Junts Backs Urban Plan Change, Clearing Path for Carmen Thyssen Museum at Barcelona’s Palau Marcet

Junts’ support follows a deal imposing heritage safeguards, a reduced commercial footprint, a defined program, plus oversight.

Overview

  • Junts per Barcelona said it will vote for modifying the metropolitan plan, enabling the Carmen Thyssen museum at the Palau Marcet, the former Cine Comèdia on Passeig de Gràcia 13.
  • The agreement mandates restoration of façades, conservation of the original volume and restitution of the historic chaflán, with any enlargement contingent on favorable reports from the Catalan heritage department and the Eixample commission.
  • Commercial uses are capped at 1,700 m², or 16% of the project, and the restaurant is barred from direct street access to prioritize museum visitors.
  • The project commits to a detailed museographic program including permanent and temporary galleries, an auditorium, education and mediation areas, technical spaces and collection storage.
  • A monitoring commission will include the Catalan government, promoters, political groups and neighborhood entities, with urban planning votes due in committee next week and a municipal plenary scheduled for May 27.
