- People who filed a 2024 tax return and received the GST/HST credit in January 2026 will be paid automatically, and the deposit may still show as the GST/HST credit.
- On July 3, the GST/HST credit will be renamed the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, and quarterly payments will rise 25% for five years based on 2025 tax returns.
- The government estimates more than 12 million people will receive support, with 2026 totals reaching up to $1,890 for a family of four and up to $950 for a single person.
- As part of the same affordability push, Ottawa will suspend the federal fuel excise tax from April 20 to September 7, cutting pump prices by about 10 cents per litre.
