Judge Orders Detention for Man Accused of Spraying Ilhan Omar at Minneapolis Town Hall

The magistrate cited community danger, labeling the town hall attack "exceedingly dangerous."

Overview

  • U.S. Magistrate Judge David T. Schultz ruled that Anthony Kazmierczak must remain in federal custody after finding probable cause he committed a felony during the Jan. 27 event.
  • Prosecutors say video shows Kazmierczak rushing the lectern and spraying liquid from a syringe as Rep. Ilhan Omar addressed constituents before he was tackled and arrested.
  • Subsequent testing indicated the substance was apple cider vinegar, and the affidavit says it stained Omar’s clothing and may have reached her face.
  • Kazmierczak faces a federal count of assaulting and interfering with a member of Congress as well as Hennepin County charges for threats of violence and assault.
  • Defense counsel sought release to a halfway house citing Parkinson’s disease, sleep apnea, and restrictive housing at Sherburne County Jail, but the judge kept him detained as a community risk.
