Judge Orders Adif to Explain Adamuz Rail Swaps and Name Supplier in Crash Probe

A five-day deadline signals a sharper turn in the hunt for the rail defect.

Overview

  • Montoro’s investigating judge gave Adif five days to detail the technical reasons for replacing a 36‑meter rail at kilometer 317.264 on track 2.
  • Adif must identify the rail supplier, its legal representative and technical director, the person who advised a preventive swap, and the Adif staff who handled and approved the change.
  • The court also required proof that the new rail carries a quality certificate and full traceability, and an explanation for a separate 42‑meter replacement between kilometers 317.300 and 317.342 on track 2.
  • The judge asked the Guardia Civil to examine the 36‑meter swap and check whether the suspected defect extends across other rail sections between kilometers 321.098 and 315.974 on both tracks.
  • The order follows Adif’s notice that a supplier flagged a rail issue near the crash site and its admission it performed maintenance there without court approval after the January 18 derailment that killed 46 people.
