JSW Motors Flags Risk to 2026 Debut as China Part Approvals Stall

India’s 2020 quality-control rules requiring local certification for overseas suppliers are delaying safety-glass imports needed for the first model.

Overview

  • In a letter dated December 18, JSW asked the commerce ministry to expedite licences and certifications for selected Chinese component makers.
  • Regulatory approvals remain pending with no public response from the ministry or the company on the status of the request.
  • The affected parts include safety glass for windscreens and sunroofs that JSW says are not readily available from Indian suppliers.
  • JSW is evaluating suppliers in Germany and Vietnam, though it warns those options would significantly increase procurement costs.
  • About $3 billion has been committed to a new, wholly owned brand set to assemble a Chery Jetour T2–based plug-in hybrid in Maharashtra, with the H2 2026 launch now contingent on clearances.
