JR’s Inflatable Wrap of Paris’s Pont Neuf Postponed After Wind Damage

Technical teams are inspecting tears in the printed-canvas structure and will set a new opening date only after completing a condition report.

Overview

  • Organisers postponed the installation’s public debut after storms or strong winds damaged parts of La Caverne du Pont Neuf in early June.
  • A joint statement from Atelier JR, the Christo and Jeanne‑Claude Foundation, and the Amicale des Ponts de Paris said experts are conducting a condition assessment to establish cause and safety implications.
  • The work is a 120‑metre inflatable printed canvas that creates a trompe‑l’œil, or optical‑illusion, rocky cave over the 419‑year‑old Pont Neuf and was due to open June 6 for a limited run.
  • The installation includes an interior soundscape by Thomas Bangalter and an AR element developed with Snap, and organisers say all materials will be repurposed or recycled after the run.
  • The project is privately financed through sales of JR’s work and sponsors including Snap, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Paris Aéroport, and Salesforce, and the delay could affect free public viewing plans until the safety report is finished.
