JR Inflates Giant Cave Over Paris’s Pont Neuf

Privately financed homage to Christo and Jeanne‑Claude opens free to visitors June 6–28.

Overview

  • The inflatable, which was inflated overnight and seen Thursday, now envelops the 17th‑century Pont Neuf and is visible from the Seine quays and nearby bridges.
  • La Caverne du Pont Neuf measures about 120 meters long and up to 18 meters high and is formed from 80 air‑filled fabric arches containing roughly 20,000 cubic meters of air.
  • Engineers ran a full‑scale dress rehearsal in an Orly Airport hangar to practice controlled deflation and other safety procedures to ensure the structure collapses gently if power fails.
  • The interior will feature an immersive soundscape by Thomas Bangalter and an augmented‑reality layer developed with Snap, and entry will be free and open 24/7 from June 6 through June 28.
  • The project was built by roughly 800 people with fabric hand‑stitched by 25 artisans in Brittany, funded by private sponsors and sales of JR’s work, and the material will be reused or recycled after the run.
