JR Central Names 'Doctor S' to Succeed Doctor Yellow on the Tokaido Shinkansen

The plan shifts inspections to N700S passenger trains that scan rails and overhead lines during regular runs.

Overview

  • JR Central, which announced the program Thursday, said four 16‑car N700S sets will start passenger service in October 2026 and begin inspection operations in January 2027.
  • The new approach performs checks with riders on board during normal trips, and the trains will carry a yellow “S” logo and reuse aluminum from the retired set to signal continuity.
  • Added roof and underfloor sensors will automatically spot wear, bends, or breaks in trolley wires, rails, and support parts, building on N700S systems that already gauge wire wear and watch ATC safety signals.
  • The fleet will comprise four 16‑car sets, with two configured for rail measurements and two for overhead wire inspections.
  • JR Central retired its Doctor Yellow in January 2025, and inspections have since been covered by JR West’s Doctor Yellow and other N700S trains.
