JPC Says ‘One Nation, One Election’ Could Be Made Operational by 2029

  • Proponents cite a Kovind committee economic estimate that separate polls cost about Rs 7 lakh crore and point to governance benefits such as fewer disruptions to schools and tourism during repeated elections.
  • Opposition delegations from Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Goa Forward Party formally opposed the plan in Goa, arguing it would weaken federalism and harm regional parties while some BJP allies have expressed unease.
  • Enacting ONOE would need the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and other legal changes plus likely state ratification, and the JPC has not yet finalised or submitted its report although some legal experts told the panel the proposal can fit within the Constitution.
