Joshua Henry and Julia Harriman to Premiere Their Original Musical The Conversation Off-Broadway

The performer-creators will headline their relationship-focused show in a limited world premiere that tests new work on the Off-Broadway stage.

Overview

  • Producers announced that The Conversation, with music and lyrics by Joshua Henry and Julia Harriman and a book by Nick Green, will premiere at the Astor Place Theatre with previews starting Nov. 17 and an official opening on Dec. 7.
  • Tony-winning director Kenny Leon is attached to direct and Mandy Hackett and Jenny Steingart are producing, with Baseline Theatrical handling general management.
  • Henry will play Marcus and Harriman will play Elle in a story that traces a long-term relationship from first dates to move-ins and the gradual build-up of things left unsaid.
  • Henry and Harriman developed the material while on the first national tour of Hamilton and through backstage songwriting and social-media performances that evolved into a full musical.
  • The project highlights a performer-led creation model and gives both artists a platform to present a pop, soul and R&B-inflected score while testing new material in an Off-Broadway run.
