Jonas Vingegaard Extends Lead With Stage 6 Win at the Tour of Catalonia

The two-time Tour de France champion carries a 1 minute 22 second cushion into Barcelona's Montjuïc circuit finale.

Overview

  • Vingegaard attacked with just over two kilometers left to win the 158 kilometer mountain stage from Berga to the Sanctuary of Queralt by 10 seconds over Lenny Martinez, with Florian Lipowitz third.
  • The victory stretched his overall lead to a provisional 1 minute 22 seconds on Martinez, with Lipowitz a further eight seconds back.
  • Remco Evenepoel, out of overall contention after the previous stage, rode on the front to help Red Bull teammate Lipowitz chase.
  • Felix Gall, second in the standings before the stage, dropped to sixth after losing contact on a fast descent before the final climb.
  • Crashes reshaped the day, as Tom Pidcock withdrew with likely bone and ligament injuries to his right knee and wrist and racing paused briefly when Movistar’s Michel Hessman crashed and went to hospital.
