Jon Bernthal Says He Walked From Daredevil Then Won the Right to Rework the Punisher

His insistence on rewriting Frank Castle helped prompt Marvel’s creative reset and shaped the Punisher’s return across recent Disney+ and film projects.

Overview

  • Bernthal told reporters on July 16 that he initially walked away from Daredevil: Born Again because he disliked how Frank Castle was written and only returned after being allowed to rework the character.
  • The series was overhauled after the 2023 writers’ strike when original showrunners Chris Ord and Matt Corman left and Dario Scardapane with directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead refocused the show’s tone and structure.
  • Marvel permitted Bernthal to rewrite the Punisher material that aired in Born Again, and he co-wrote the standalone special The Punisher: One Last Kill after five years of negotiating for creative control.
  • Bernthal appears as Frank Castle in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opens July 31, and he has described a protective, mentor-like dynamic with Peter Parker while joking about doing ADR for a hospital scene.
  • Marvel has not confirmed a full Punisher series despite One Last Kill leaving room for more stories, and Bernthal’s fight for creative input highlights a wider shift toward stronger showrunners and greater performer influence in MCU TV and film.
