Joliet Man Charged With Aggravated Animal Cruelty After Rooster Beating Outside Produce Store

Police cite a false name with conflicting explanations about training the bird as the rooster receives care in protective custody.

Overview

  • Officers responded around 3:46 p.m. Saturday to Gonzalez Fresh Produce on Collins Street after reports that a man was beating a rooster.
  • Responding police found Francisco Arreola, 39, holding a tan, black and white rooster on a rope leash with visible head injuries.
  • Arreola faces counts of felony aggravated animal cruelty, misdemeanor cruelty, an animals-in-entertainment violation, and obstructing justice.

  • Joliet Township Animal Control took the rooster into custody, and the department’s Animal Crimes Team coordinated veterinary treatment and follow-up.
