John Williams Returns to Podium at Hollywood Bowl Tribute

His surprise Sept. 5 encore conducting of “The Imperial March” offered a visible sign of continued public involvement after last year’s health-related withdrawals.

Overview

  • On Sept. 5 the 94-year-old composer unexpectedly took the podium to conduct the encore, “The Imperial March,” and was met with a standing ovation as thousands of lightsabers lit the amphitheater.
  • David Newman conducted the main programs across the three-night Maestro of the Movies engagement while Bryce Dallas Howard served as the evening’s host.
  • The concerts presented a broad cross-section of Williams’s film scores and, according to the Hollywood Bowl, included more than 50 minutes of specially edited film clips, the largest such use in the series’ history.
  • Williams withdrew from several scheduled 2024 engagements for health reasons and has not announced retirement, so this public appearance is a notable update on his post-withdrawal activity.
  • The return reinforced Williams’s long ties to the venue, which dedicated its stage in his name in November 2025, and may shape fans’ and presenters’ expectations about future guest appearances.
