John Romero Revives Canceled Shooter as Smaller, Redesigned Game

Romero says the once-large project has been rebuilt from existing assets into an indie-scale shooter.

Overview

  • Speaking at Salón del Videojuego de Madrid, Romero confirmed the previously canceled project has survived and is back in development.
  • He said the game has been basically completely redesigned and remains a shooter, teasing novel gameplay that he compared to Elden Ring’s sense of discovery.
  • Romero cited prior work from roughly 110 developers and about $50 million in assets that the team can repurpose, saying they are not starting from zero.
  • The new version is described as a much smaller project, with department leads now taking a more hands-on role in coding and design.
  • Key details such as publisher arrangements and a release window were not disclosed, after the original funding was pulled during Microsoft’s cost-cutting earlier this year.
