Johannes Liebmann, 19, Sets European 800m Record in Stockholm

The SC Magdeburg teenager vaulted to No. 1 in Germany's 1500m pecking order ahead of this month's national championships.

Overview

  • Liebmann set a European record in the 800m freestyle at the Swim Open in Stockholm with a time of 7:37.94.
  • He won the 1500m in 14:39.67, which leads this year's world rankings and broke Germany's 19-year-old record by about 15 seconds.
  • He took second in the 400m final in 3:44.59 after lowering the German 19-year-old mark in the prelims to 3:46.84.
  • These swims moved him to the top of Germany's internal 1500m selection for the European Championships, with national titles in Berlin later in April expected to shape final spots.
  • The 19-year-old has surged since moving to SC Magdeburg to train under Bernd Berkhahn alongside stars Lukas Märtens, Florian Wellbrock and Oliver Klemet, all while sitting his Abitur exams.
