Joey Chestnut Pleads Guilty to Misdemeanor Battery, Will Compete on Probation

Judge-approved travel permits Chestnut to attend Nathan’s July 4 contest despite a 180-day probation sentence.

Overview

  • Chestnut entered a guilty plea on April 20 to a Class B misdemeanor battery charge and was sentenced to 180 days of probation that runs through October.
  • Court records and a police affidavit say the incident took place at Joe’s Grill on March 21, when bar surveillance shows Chestnut pull a man forward and strike him with an open right hand.
  • When questioned by police the day after the incident Chestnut said he was "pretty drunk and didn't remember," and after watching video he told officers the slap "looked like a joke" and that he "must have taken offense."
  • A judge granted Chestnut permission to travel outside Indiana and both Major League Eating and Nathan’s have declined to punish or bar him, clearing the way for his planned appearance at Coney Island on July 4.
  • Chestnut’s status as a 17-time Nathan’s champion and his past sponsorship dispute that led to a 2024 ban make the episode a reputational risk that could affect future endorsements and public scrutiny even as he prepares to defend his title.
