Overview
- Joby Aviation began a weeklong set of demonstration flights in the Dallas–Fort Worth region that started on Sept. 10 to test preproduction eVTOL operations under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.
- The campaign includes flights from Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport and planned roundtrips into Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to evaluate how eVTOLs integrate with controlled airspace and regular commercial traffic.
- Texas has launched Project Nexus as a delegated, three-year, multistate pilot to map routes, test low-noise operations and advance staged goals that include cargo, medical deliveries, autonomous flights and eventual passenger service.
- Federal officials say data from these demonstrations will be used to inform new FAA rules and can accelerate the long FAA type certification process that must be completed before commercial passenger operations can begin.
- The tests bring together multiple eVTOL makers tapped for the eIPP but also occur while the industry faces technical hurdles like battery and sensor trade-offs and legal disputes such as reported trade-secret lawsuits between Joby and Archer.
