J&K Unveils 10-Year Hydropower Plan to Reach 11,000 MW by 2035

Officials say work has sped up after the Indus Water Treaty was put on hold.

Overview

  • J&K’s government, in a Legislative Assembly reply on Friday, set a target to lift installed capacity from 3,540.15 MW today to about 11,000 MW by 2035.
  • The roadmap details 3,063.5 MW from six projects already under construction, 4,507 MW from eight in tendering or clearances, plus 100–150 MW expected from private developers.
  • Officials said construction has accelerated after the treaty pause removed earlier cross‑border clearances and they are now scouting storage dam sites to use more of the region’s potential.
  • Installed capacity is projected to reach 5,164.15 MW by December 2026 with the 1,000 MW Pakaldul and 624 MW Kiru plants nearing completion, with about 78% of work done on each.
  • A draft J&K Hydel Policy 2025 is out for public feedback to draw private builders to small river projects and to require free power or royalty to the UT after an initial operating period.
