J&K Puts Forces on High Alert as LG, Army Hold Back-to-Back Security Reviews

Following protests over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, authorities tightened curbs to prevent unrest.

Overview

  • Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a law-and-order review at Srinagar’s Police Control Room and directed a heightened state of alert, urging citizens and community leaders to help maintain calm.
  • An earlier high-level session at Lok Bhavan brought together the Northern Command chief, the J&K DGP, and the 15 Corps commander to brief the LG on counterterror operations, border management and intelligence coordination.
  • Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma separately met formation commanders and sister agencies in Srinagar to evaluate evolving risks and reaffirm protection of civilians.
  • Restrictions continued across parts of the Valley with public gatherings barred, schools and colleges largely shut earlier in the week with phased reopening outside Srinagar and Budgam, transport curtailed, and mobile data throttled to 2G.
  • Srinagar Cyber Police registered FIR No. 01/2026 against outlets and individuals accused of circulating fabricated content to incite unrest, as police reported no major fresh incidents beyond a brief skirmish in Pattan.
