Jharkhand Orders Probe After Father Carries Newborn’s Body Home From Hospital

The incident has renewed scrutiny of transport support for grieving families in Jharkhand’s public hospitals.

Overview

  • Additional Chief Secretary for Health Ajoy Singh said a formal investigation is underway and promised action if negligence is found.
  • Ramakrishna Hembrom took his newborn’s body in a cardboard box to his village by e-rickshaw after the death at Chakradharpur Sub-Divisional Hospital.
  • Hospital in-charge Dr Anshuman Sharma said the family made no request for a vehicle and noted that free 108 ambulances or Mamta Vahan can be arranged on request.
  • The hospital reported fetal distress before a stillbirth, kept the mother under observation, and opened an internal inquiry after a video of the father leaving surfaced.
  • Family members allege they were not informed about any ambulance or mortuary facility, with reports also recalling a similar case in the district in December 2025.
