Jersey City Leaders Seek Injunction as Heights Hospital Sets Saturday ED Shutdown

New Jersey health regulators have said the operator lacks required approvals to close.

Overview

  • Jersey City Council unanimously passed an emergency resolution urging Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Attorney General Jennifer Davenport to seek a court order and place the facility into receivership.
  • Hudson County commissioners are launching an inquiry as county counsel said NJDOH told officials the closure cannot proceed because the application remains pending and requires Health Planning Board hearings.
  • Hudson Regional Health says it will suspend emergency department services at 7:30 p.m. on March 14 and has outlined mitigation steps with Alliance Community Healthcare, mobile units, and an on-site ambulance for two weeks to transport patients.
  • District 1199J filed a state WARN Act complaint on March 9 alleging abrupt late-2025 shutdowns and mass layoffs, while HRH says most employees were offered positions elsewhere and contends the matter is in arbitration.
  • Elected officials and the HPAE union warn losing the ER would worsen access in a city they say already falls short of needed hospital bed capacity.
