Japan's National Police Agency Hires Private Cyber Expert as Senior Strategy Officer

The part-time post injects private-sector cyber expertise into police operations to boost technical capabilities through March 2027.

Overview

  • The National Police Agency appointed Mitsui-affiliated security executive Ogawa Satoshi to the newly created role of Major Cyber Incident Strategy Officer on Wednesday to provide hands-on technical support.
  • Ogawa will work as a very-part-time national public servant attached to the Cyber Police Bureau and the Kanto Regional Cyber Special Investigation Department to aid incident response and technical analysis.
  • His duties include vulnerability discovery, information analysis and advising on human-resource development for cyber investigations.
  • Ogawa will remain an executive at Mitsui Bussan Secure Direction while reporting to police offices one to two days a week under a fixed term that runs through March 2027 and a pay rate set at the deputy-minister equivalent of ¥8,747 per hour.
  • The appointment marks the agency's first hire of private talent at a deputy-minister level and signals a move toward closer public–private integration to speed technical response and broaden training inside Japan's cyber police units.
