Japan Intercepts New Variant of Chinese Y-9 Patrol Plane Over East China Sea

The sighting signals improved Chinese sub-hunting reach near key Japanese sea lanes.

Overview

  • The JASDF, which scrambled fighters Saturday, identified a Y-9 with a new nose profile and said it was the first time the force had confirmed and announced this type.
  • Open-source analysts assess the aircraft as the Y-9FQ, an anti-submarine patrol version equipped with surface search radar, sonobuoy launchers, and a magnetic anomaly detector to find subs at long range.
  • Following Friday’s circuit by two Russian Tu-142 maritime patrol planes around Japan, JASDF units launched fighters as the aircraft transited the Pacific, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Sea of Japan.
  • The JMSDF shadowed the Russian surveillance ship Pribaltica near the Tsugaru Strait, using minesweeper JS Izushima, support ship JS Suo, and a P-3C patrol plane to track its movement through Japan’s contiguous zone.
  • On Sunday, Japan also monitored the Chinese intelligence-collection ship Jinxing as it moved through the Tsushima Strait into the Sea of Japan, highlighting how these narrow passages draw close surveillance because foreign transits are lawful but sensitive.
