Jamie Felix’s Jury Trial Opens in Winnipeg Shooting That Killed Five

Prosecutors opened a four-week jury trial by alleging deliberate choices despite intoxication.

Overview

  • Crown prosecutor Georgia Couturier told jurors Felix fired nine shots into a suite described as a drug den, then tried to shoot himself with an empty gun before fleeing and being arrested five days later.
  • Couturier said Felix had spent days using crack and alcohol at the rooming house yet still knew his actions were wrong and understood the consequences.
  • The prosecution alleged Felix’s father and brother were tied to a gang operating the suite, that his brother supplied a bulletproof vest and handgun, and that Felix test-fired a round in a lane before opening fire.
  • The first witness, Const. Chad Swenarchuk, testified an injured man identified as Shawn Marko told police at the scene that a person named “Jamie Houle” shot him.
  • The victims were identified as Crystal Beardy, 34; Stephanie Beardy, 33; Melelek Lesikel, 29; Dylan Lavallee, 41; and Marko, 56, who died last year after 18 months in hospital; the case is before Justice Alain Huberdeau.
