Overview
- Warner Bros. used CinemaCon in Las Vegas to unveil The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, confirm a December 17, 2027 theatrical release, and announce the principal cast.
- Andy Serkis will direct and again play Gollum, with Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Lee Pace as Thranduil.
- Jamie Dornan steps into the role of a younger Aragorn, known as Strider, during a pursuit of Gollum with Gandalf that fits between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
- New additions include Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard, a northern ranger who joins Aragorn on the search.
- Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou wrote the script, Peter Jackson and longtime partners will produce, and Warner Bros. and New Line also have a separate Middle‑earth project in development titled The Shadow of the Past.
