James Gunn Rebukes Maxima Casting Report as THR and Variety Name New ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Finalists

Following Gunn’s public rebuke, other trades reported four actresses tested in Atlanta for the unconfirmed role.

Overview

  • James Gunn, in Wednesday posts on Threads, called Deadline’s Maxima shortlist “shoddy & inaccurate,” prompting the outlet to update its story and remove Marisa Abela and Ella Purnell.
  • The Hollywood Reporter and Variety later reported a different group of finalists—Adria Arjona, Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler and Grace Van Patten—who they say tested this week in Atlanta.
  • DC Studios declined to comment, and Variety said a deal is near as filming is set to begin in Atlanta as soon as late next week.
  • Gunn said every major role in Man of Tomorrow is cast with “one left,” and he declined to confirm that the open part is Maxima, an alien queen who has been portrayed in comics as both foe and would-be love interest for Superman.
  • The sequel brings back David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult with Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, and it is scheduled to reach theaters on July 9, 2027, which suggests the final casting will be locked soon as production ramps up.
