James Cameron Weighs 3D Conversion of Aliens

He cites newer depth-mapping tools that could make a faithful conversion worthwhile.

Overview

  • Cameron, in a Letterboxd interview published Tuesday, said he is thinking about converting his 1986 film Aliens to stereoscopic 3D.
  • He called the movie "evergreen" and said improved depth-map technology now makes a high-quality conversion more achievable.
  • There is no timetable, as his schedule is dominated by Avatar 4 and 5 along with the feature project Ghosts of Hiroshima.
  • Earlier conversions of Titanic and Terminator 2 each took about a year, with reports citing an $18 million budget for Titanic and more than 1,400 artists on T2.
  • Both the theatrical and director's cuts of Aliens are streaming on HBO Max, keeping the film in view for fans ahead of any potential re-release.
