Jalisco Secures Mexico’s First Federal Permit to Commercialize Biomethane

The Brimex Energy plant in Lagos de Moreno is authorized for up to 12,456 cubic meters per day to open a regulated route for renewable gas integration.

Overview

  • Issuance came from Sener’s Subsecretaría de Planeación y Transición Energética through its Directorate of Renewable Energies with accompaniment from Jalisco’s Sedes.
  • The permit enables formal integration of locally produced biomethane into the national energy system as part of Mexico’s transition strategy.
  • The authorized volume equals the gas use of more than 2,500 homes and is reported to avoid over 8,000 tonnes of CO2 annually by preventing uncontrolled methane release.
  • Biomethane will be produced from organic, agroindustrial and livestock waste, supporting a circular economy and yielding byproducts such as biofertilizers.
  • Officials say the authorization sets legal and technical precedent for a regulated market with quality, safety and traceability standards that can lessen dependence on imported natural gas.
