Jalisco Scraps 14-Peso Transit Hike, Sets 11-Peso Fare Effective April 1

The decision follows protests alongside a court ruling rejecting discounts conditioned on a private bank card.

Overview

  • Governor Pablo Lemus said no rider will pay 14 pesos and confirmed the 11-peso fare applies with cash, the Tarjeta Única and Mi Movilidad cards.
  • The 5-peso student rate continues statewide with CURP and academic record verification, and free transport programs for older adults, people with disabilities and other groups remain in place.
  • The Tarjeta Única stays in operation as an optional multiuse card run by Broxel, whose role drew consumer and privacy concerns reported by critics and by Condusef assessments.
  • The state will cover 3 pesos per bus trip for operators to meet the 14-peso technical fare, an outlay La Jornada estimates at about 7.92 million pesos daily and roughly 2.89 billion pesos per year.
  • Local deputies welcomed the reversal but pressed for the formal decree and funding details as a provisional amparo shields 35 students and additional legal challenges proceed, with card distribution still far from universal.
