Jalisco Retakes National Tequila Museum, Launches 15 Million-Peso Rehabilitation Plan

The relaunch hinges on federal investigators removing seals that still restrict access to parts of the building.

Overview

  • State authorities executed an administrative recovery on March 10–11 under procedure CJ/RA-01/2026, entering with a locksmith and a notary as Army, National Guard, state and municipal police secured the site.
  • Three areas of the museum remain secured by the FGR following an INAH complaint, and those spaces cannot be verified or restored until the seals are lifted.
  • An inventory of collections and archives has begun and is projected to take three to five weeks, contingent on list handovers from the municipality.
  • Operation of the museum shifts to Jalisco’s Secretariat of Culture, with a 15 million peso rehabilitation coordinated with INAH and the FGR and a target to reopen before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • Context to the takeover includes the arrest and prosecution of ex-mayor Diego Rivera Navarro on federal charges and official claims of misuse during municipal control, as well as the absence of a formal comodato contract.
