Jalisco and Santa Fe Report Sharp Early-2026 Homicide Declines

The announcements signal progress that still requires sustained effort.

Overview

  • Jalisco logged 279 intentional homicides from January through April 2026, down from 501 a year earlier for a 44.31% drop, according to state prosecutor Salvador González de los Santos.
  • Santa Fe recorded 48 killings in the same span, down from 156 in 2023, and government spokeswoman Virginia Coudannes used the contrast to rebut former security ministers Aníbal Fernández and Marcelo Sain.
  • Jalisco reported deeper multi-year declines, citing 53.5% fewer cases than in 2024 and 58% fewer than in 2023.
  • State officials said Jalisco has shifted from a top-five national ranking for killings to 12th place.
  • Santa Fe also reported 11 notices sent to people linked to threats against schools and fewer calls about new threats.
