Overview
- JAL and ANA, which announced the change Monday, secured same-day approval to start higher surcharges on tickets issued in May and June with North America and Europe set at ¥56,000 one way.
- Both carriers raised the ceiling on these add-on fees, lifting long-haul Japan–North America caps to ¥59,000 after prior limits proved too low.
- Government subsidies to fuel suppliers kept the applied level one notch below the new caps, which prevented an even higher charge.
- For travelers, the increase takes April’s ¥31,900 on ANA and ¥29,000 on JAL for these routes to ¥56,000 per one-way ticket in May–June.
- The policy shift is spreading at home as Fuji Dream Airlines moves its May domestic surcharge to the top band and ANA, JAL, and Skymark weigh adding domestic fees in 2027.
