Jake McMillan Jailed for Christmas Day Murder of Billy McNicholl

The sentence caps a year-long inquiry that police say may never yield a clear motive.

Overview

  • McMillan was sentenced Thursday at Ipswich Crown Court to 13 years by Judge Samantha Leigh.
  • The 19-year-old was found guilty by a jury on February 6 after a three-week trial.
  • Police released CCTV and bodycam footage that, with forensic matches, placed him at the flat and linked bloody trainer prints, fingerprints and DNA to him.
  • CCTV showed he stayed about two hours after arriving on an electric bike, then he admitted dumping the victim’s phones in the River Orwell and received a concurrent seven-month term for a cannabis supply offence.
  • Mr McNicholl’s body was found on January 1 after neighbours heard his dog howling, and a post-mortem found fatal head injuries and a stab wound to his right shoulder.
